HVAC Commissioning/Recommissioning
Recommissioning a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system is a systematic method of improving a building’s indoor air quality and energy efficiency by evaluating the performance of building systems. Since 1996, the Institute for Environmental Assessment, Inc. (IEA) has successfully completed work on commissioning projects ranging in size from $1 million to $50 million.
About IEA
IEA is an environmental consulting firm based in Minnesota and Nebraska. Since 1984, our consultants have provided a wide range of services to clients that include schools and school districts, government agencies, hospitals, commercial entities and manufacturing firms. Our HVAC system commissioning and recommissioning projects have allowed clients to realize significant energy savings.
Examples of HVAC problems identified by IEA
Common problems that cause high energy costs include:
- Inefficient scheduling of HVAC equipment
- Simultaneous heating and cooling
- Economizer sequences not optimized
- Incorrect airflow and water balance
- Malfunctioning sensors or incorrect calibration
- Fan VFD control overridden
- Supply air static pressure set-points not optimized
- Boiler controls not operating efficiently
- Balancing dampers and valves not installed or installed in poor or unusable locations.
- Incorrectly piped water coils
- Shop drawing incomplete or incorrect
- Incomplete or incorrect control component installation
- Control sequence incorrectly implemented
- Substituted control components
- Incomplete installations (missing control valve, actuators, etc.)
- Testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) not or only partially completed
IEA consultants have uncovered problems such as these in new and older construction. Clients know that as independent commissioning inspectors, our firm represents their interests during the construction or renovation process.
