Light Fixture Replacement

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (AARA) of 2009 contains significant resources for energy savings. It covers halide lighting replacement projects, which offer major energy savings and reduce a potential building hazard. At the Institute for Environmental Assessment, Inc. (IEA), our consultants work with schools, hospitals and commercial building owners to ensure that metal halide lighting replacement projects realize their intended benefits.

Why replace metal halide light fixtures?

Replacement of metal halide lights with high-efficiency lighting is an effective way to lower energy costs with a quick payback.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health bulletin warning of the dangers of ultraviolet radiation burns from broken, non-self-extinguishing “R” type metal halide bulbs. To prevent incidents from occurring, the FDA recommends the replacement of metal halide light fixtures; replacement of open or wire grid fixtures with enclosed fixtures; or replacement of non-self-extinguishing “R” type high intensity metal halide and mercury vapor light bulbs used in open or wire grid fixtures with self-extinguishing “T” type light bulbs.

Benefits of metal halide fixture replacement

Replacement of metal halide fixtures has several benefits:

  • Increased building energy efficiency
  • Qualifies for energy rebates from electrical service providers
  • Greater flexibility in lighting controls and use
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Proactive solution to an identified public health concern
